About Out to See Optometry
The story of a doctor who followed her calling across the country — and found her home in Kailua.
“Out to See Kailua — how it all started.”
From Tampa to Kailua
Dr. Lauren Mordue's path to becoming one of Kailua's most trusted optometrists was shaped by two decades of training, mentorship, and practice across four cities.
Inspired by the Best
Dr. Lauren Mordue began her career in optometry in 2004, working alongside Dr. William Billig and Dr. Debra Dahlberg at Optics Soho in Tampa, Florida. It was Dr. Dahlberg who had first inspired Lauren as a patient — and now she was learning from her directly. These early years gave Dr. Mordue a deep foundation in compassionate, precision-driven eye care.
Helping People See Without Glasses
Dr. Mordue left Tampa and moved to the Upper East Side of Manhattan to pursue her Doctor of Optometry degree. While there, she collaborated with top ophthalmologists at The LASIK Center in midtown — helping hundreds of patients achieve their dream of glasses-free vision. New York sharpened her clinical instincts and fueled her passion for transformative eye care.
New England College of Optometry
Dr. Mordue earned her Doctor of Optometry degree at New England College of Optometry in Boston, one of the most respected optometry programs in the country. She completed clinical externships across Boston, New Jersey, Florida, and Kaneohe Bay Marine Base in Hawaii. After graduating, she spent five years with LensCrafters in Honolulu and Aiea, refining her craft and building relationships with the communities she served.
Putting Down Roots in Kailua
Today, Dr. Mordue lives in Kailua with her husband Brian and their two boys, Ethan and Luke. Brian is a retired NYPD detective and professional photographer and filmmaker. Ethan is a wildly active six-year-old who loves cliff jumping, surfing, and running super fast. Luke is a thoughtful, clever four-year-old who lives for superheroes and epic battles — quiet, calculated, and sweet at heart, with just the right touch of mischief.
More Than an Eye Doctor. A Neighbor.
Out to See opened its doors in March 2023 at Lau Hala Shops in Kailua, with one clear goal: deliver exceptional care and high-quality eyewear to the Windward Oʻahu community. Being part of this neighborhood is just as important to us as caring for your eyes.
We love creating opportunities to connect with families and neighbors — whether that's sponsoring Santa and offering free holiday photos, marching in the Fourth of July parade, hosting Sip & Shop nights, or handing out candy on Halloween. Supporting the community that supports us is at the heart of who we are.
Why Patients Choose Out to See
Dr. Mordue brings over 20 years of optometry experience to every exam — combined with a genuine love for this craft, this community, and this island.
