Can You Walk In for an Eye Exam?
You wake up, your glasses are sitting in two pieces on the nightstand, and your contact lens supply ran out last Tuesday. Or the DMV just told you that you didn't pass the vision screening and you can't renew your license until an eye doctor sees you. Either way, you have the same question: can I just walk in somewhere today?
The short answer
Often, yes — but call or text first. At Out to See in Kailua, we hold room for same-day exams whenever the schedule allows, Monday through Saturday. The catch is that every exam is one-on-one with Dr. Mordue, so on a busy day the next opening might be a few hours out, or not until tomorrow. That's not us hedging. It's how appointment-first practices everywhere actually work, whether they say so or not. The difference is whether someone tells you before you make the trip.
What "walk-in friendly" really means
There are three different things people mean by "walk in," and they work differently:
1. A same-day eye exam. This is the big one — and it depends entirely on the day's schedule. Monday mornings and Saturdays fill fastest. Weekday afternoons are your best odds. Call or text first, every time.
2. Glasses help — adjustments, repairs, browsing frames. True walk-in, no appointment ever needed. If your frames are crooked, a screw fell out, or you just want to try on Maui Jims during your lunch break, come by any time we're open — including Sundays, when the eyewear boutique is open even though the exam lane isn't.
3. Something's wrong with your eye. Redness, pain, something stuck in there, a sudden change in vision — call us first, but call us fast. We triage these differently than routine exams and will often work you in the same day as an office visit. For serious symptoms — sudden vision loss, flashes with a curtain over your vision, chemical burns, or an object embedded in the eye — skip us and go to urgent care or the ER. Truly.
Why we're appointment-first (and still love last-minute patients)
Some practices run high-volume schedules where a walk-in slides into a 15-minute slot between other patients. We made a different choice: every comprehensive exam here is about 30–45 minutes, one-on-one with Dr. Mordue, and includes the full workup — digital refraction, retinal imaging, glaucoma screening, and time for every question you have.
The trade-off is real: we can't guarantee an opening at 2 PM on a Saturday. What we can do is tell you the truth in real time. Text us, and we'll look at the actual schedule and give you the soonest real option — today if we have it, tomorrow if we don't. We enjoy fitting people in; we just don't want anyone making a wasted trip.
What a same-day exam includes
Walking in fast doesn't mean a watered-down visit. A same-day comprehensive exam is the same exam as a booked one:
Digital refraction for your eyeglass prescription (no "1 or 2?" guessing marathon)
Retinal imaging — a baseline photo of the back of your eye we track year over year
Glaucoma pressure screening and peripheral vision check
A full eye-health evaluation, front to back
Unhurried time with Dr. Mordue to go through everything she found
Need contacts too? A contact lens fitting can often be added to the same visit — mention it when you call. And if you need glasses fast, our in-house ZEISS lab cuts lenses right here in Kailua; many single-vision jobs turn around same-week, sometimes same-day.
The Kailua specifics
We're at Lau Hala Shops — 573 Kailua Road, Suite 106 — with free parking, which matters when you're making a "right now" trip. Eye exams run Monday–Saturday, 10am–6pm. The eyewear boutique is open seven days, including Sunday, for frames, adjustments and repairs.
Insurance-wise: we're in-network with UHA, and we see TRICARE Prime and TRICARE Select families as a non-network provider — many military families on the Windward side choose us for exactly that reason, and we'll walk you through what that means for your plan before you come in. You wear specialty contacts or have a complex prescription — we'll reserve the extra time properly
You want dilation done and a driver arranged — easier to plan than to improvise
